Life Updates
I'm probably getting a new sort-of sibling! My [adopted] brother's best friend's girlfriend is in a broken foster care situation, and my brother has convinced my parents to become her long-term guardians. The home study is next week. I'll probably meet her first at Thanksgiving, but my mom says she livens up the house. My parents are going to move into my bedroom my mom's office, and she's going to move into my parent's bedroom.

The Rocky show last night was great! For non-FBCers, if you haven't seen this year's preshow lineup yet, don't miss our Halloween Show, at 10 pm!

For FBCers, oh, what a tangled web we weave! I now feel good and weight-lifted about my own interpersonals at Rocky, but I worry that broken-love/relationship troubles have practically become an epidemic. This might even call for a support group. I keep wanting to diagram it all out, but my efforts are probably better applied to being an open ear-- if anyone wants one, I'm here. And if I haven't been there when you wanted someone, please believe that it's just because I'm distractable, not because my sympathy has run thin.

A diagram, eh? Sort of like a cross between The Chart on the The L Word, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_L_Word#The_Chart, and this xkcd comic? http://xkcd.com/c173.html

That might be intersting to see.

I like the xkcd system-- that's exactly what I was thinking of, but on the scale of The Chart. I've seen ones for couplings in groups, but it gets *really* messy when you're considering secret crushes, and different levels of friendship/animosity. Not to mention that it probably shouldn't be public. But hey, if there's demand-- and help-- I'll see what I can do.

I think the idea of making an L Word-style Rocky chart was brought up at a party last year sometime. I was tempted to do it then, and I'm tempted now. I think the biggest obstacle would be the unwillingness of the subjects to give up the necessary data.

I think the reason The Chart works is because it focuses strictly on sexual couplings. Also, in the show it's something that has grown and been added to for years. And the reason the situation addressed in the xkcd comic occurs is because including those variables in the diagram is so complicated. But then again, no one ever said life was simple.

It would be very difficult. A lot of people won't admit to liking, disliking, or having slept with someone, or at least won't if the knowledge might be semi-public among the cast/crew. Secret crushes are secret for a reason, and in the era of PC and the interest of general harmony, a lot of people don't admit to disliking other people. I think the levels of friendship might be adding a needless complexity to it. Even if you drastically simplify it down to friends, acquaintances, and antagonists, it would still be a very dense map.

A diagram would be rather specially hilarious.
And this year's lineup is great for preshows...I still haven't decided if I think this is better than the first set I ever saw in Harvard Square in 2002. Its better than all the ones in between though!

Specially hilarious? How special?

Part of my brain keeps making little suggestions for an engineered, anonymous, collaborative solution to the diagram. And if the goal were better understanding, I'd say damn the consequences-- but people seem pretty fragile, and I don't want to get anyone hurt for something that's just for fun.

As for the preshows, I'm amazed at what a difference it makes. Last year, even though I thought we had several good ones, the whole thing seemed to drag on. The only thing that does that this year is the Snakes on a Plane preview.

re: SoaP: I think I overheard Gary talking to someone (theatre manager? I was running past...) about swapping that out with something else. There may be hope, yet! But I don't want to start rumours...
