[updates] Latter-Day Omens
Every Wednesday I walk away from Rocky preshow meeting with a silly smile on my face.

Saturday, I did Monologue (RHPS virgin hazing)! I was dizzyingly nervous the day before, but as it got closer and closer to the time, I just got less nervous. And then I was there, and my talking-to-crowds-auto-pilot took over. I had fun and I think it was good. I was told that I need to be louder; if anyone else has comments on things to improve next time, I'd love to hear them.

The after-party was at my place. It felt disconnected, like the groupings of people never found their groove. And I was in an odd mood; in my mind, I kept seeing people fall into their weaknesses instead of becoming their strengths. It was fun and all, but it seemed to reflect a shallowness of recent parties at a time when deep connections are blossoming at Rocky. Does anyone else feel this?

I know some people would just avoid parties for this, but I'm a creature of community, and it makes me want to fix things. Maybe we need new party games? The power of the party game is to drive us to give up our pretenses, manifest our desires, and reveal ourselves to each other.

Also that night, I opened my disposable-party-stuff cabinet... and a twig nest and a very surprised black bird started falling out. So I quickly shut it and pretended nothing happened. I was worried that I might have hurt the bird, but I've since heard lots of activity up there. This morning, I was rummaged in the cabinet underneath, and this little "Hey, I'm trying to sleep here!" peep answered me.

Yesterday, when a friend was hanging out in my room while I was away, a black cat jumped through the window, gave her a frightened look, and hopped back out. And I have a small infestation of moth-like locusts, and I can’t find their breeding grounds. My apartment is being taken over by wildlife omens.

2. Your fault. I downloaded Fall Out Boy after looking up some lyrics in one of your away messages.

Well I'm sorry to hear I missed your monologue debut :(

Also, sorry to hear that the party didn't find a rhythm. Something has been "off" for quite a while. And I know I'm not the only one that feels it. I know people always talk about the good old days, and maybe three years from now somebody will be talking about these being those days, but I can't see it. I don't know what has been added or taken away that makes the mix seem wrong, and I know tha distancing myself from the situation is no way to either improve it, or figure out what exactly is wrong, but I have to admit I just plain haven't been having fun at the show. I haven't been in the theater since April 7th, missed two weekends outright, and I can't say that I regret it. And two years ago that would have been unimaginable.

I'm going to be in NY during the day Saturday, but I'll do my best to make it back for the party, and will try to be the spirit of Rocky Parties Past.

I think we shouldn't try to to get back to the Rocky-fu of three years ago-- the personalities are just so different now. But I think we can find our own golden age of Rocky parties, and have it be as sexual, surprising, dangerous, exciting, and deviant (to take some words that I associate with good Rocky parties) as any back in "the day".

I don't know how to get there, but I think one thing that would help is to find situations where people are comfortable being naked... or a lot less clothed than normal.

I have a (bad?) habit of being oblivious to the atmosphere of parties. If I'm having a truly sucking time then yeah, I'll notice it then. But otherwise I tend to enjoy the party for what it's worth, and only after the fact notice how fragmented or blah it may have been. So it's kind of hard for me to try to correct a "poorly functioning party" when it's happening.

Not that the above comment helps in any way. Guess I was just doing a brain dump.

Onto something that may or may not help... I just now had a totally random fragment of an idea for a new party game.

It would be kind of like the bowl game, in that there would be a bowl of slips of paper. But rather than passing the bowl around while people are actively playing, this would be more of a "door prize" thing. When you arrive at the party you draw your slip and receive your "mission" for the night. Of course I'm not sure what the missions might be (thus why it's an idea fragment.) But I suspect that you could come up with some interesting ones.
